Fairyland Tree Planting & Sausage Sizzle July 2012
Friends held a very successful National Tree Day event this year on Sunday 29th July, at a site in River Avenue, that is part of our NSW Envirotrust, Fairyland to Fullers grant area. The planting area was originally very degraded, infested with dense privet and bamboo among other weeds. Some time ago the National Park staff cleared the weeds and capped the site with crushed sandstone to deter reinfestation. It makes an ideal planting substrate for our local sandstone species.
On the day we had 50 registered
volunteers, made up of locals, Friends of LCNP, individuals who had been
attracted to tree day, a very enthusiastic group from Panasonic and some
off duty parks staff with their families. We planted about 640 local plants,
a mix of trees, shrubs and ground covers, so by any measure it was very
successful. It was also great to see so many youngsters helping and enjoying
themselves. They and their parents also both seemed to enjoy the excellent
homemade biscuits, fruit and sausage sizzle.
Any one who would be interested in more regular volunteer involvement, please look at our Volunteer Bushcare page.
